Picasso Dictation (L i s T e N i N G)

Material:        A description for teacher to introduce the lesson, paper for drawing, pictures     

Time:              10-15 minutes

Objectives:     To practice listening to description of pictures

            To practice of using the preposition of place

                        To practice describing the pictures

                        To create their own story 

Procedure:

1.      Preparation. Teacher will start by asking students if there is anyone likes to dictate. Then, teacher will tell the students the main idea of the class that they will do a dictation, but it will not be a letter dictation; it will be a drawing dictation. Teacher will also ask students if there is anyone likes to draw. Then, teacher will ask students to do a drawing dictation toward teacher’s description about a place. Teacher will describe sentence by sentence. After finishing drawing, teacher will show students real picture of that place so that students can compare between their works and the real picture.

 

Description might be:

This is a picture of a public park in the beautiful day. In the park, there is a big tree at the left hand side of the park, and the nice sun is shining on the top of the right hand side. While there are three birds flying next to the right hand side of the sun, there are two clouds at the left hand side. Back to the ground, there is a Beatle car beneath the tree.

 

      2.   Presentation: Teacher will explain to the students about what they

            will be doing. After that, teacher will have students in pairs. Then,

            teacher will model activity for students.

 

      3.   Practice. Teacher will give each student a picture. Then, teacher  

            have them to work in pairs to give each other the dictation; have

one student make their own story of the picture and have them describe the picture as the other student draws the picture. Teacher also gives students a clue of the picture at the back side of the picture. While students will be doing the activity, teacher will observe and help their works.

 

4.      Evaluation. After finishing the activity, teacher will ask students to

compare between their drawings and the real pictures.

 

5.      Extension. Teachers will ask students to do the same activity at

home; students might ask any member in their family to describe pictures for them. Then, students will bring their drawings to the class attached with the real pictures.

 

Culture Cards (L i s T e N i N G )

Age:                18+

Material:        Several cards with American culture words

Objective:       Practice listening skill for specific information or mail ideas

 

Procedure:

1.      Preparation. Teacher will start by asking students about how long have they been in USA for. Teacher will also ask students if anyone had problem with American culture when they first came here; it might be American greeting.

 

2.      Presentation. Teacher will explain to students about what they will be doing. Teacher will give student an example of the activities

 

3.      Practice.

Activity 1:

·         Teacher will have students make a group of three people.

·         Teacher will pick a couple words of 15 cards, and give explanations of each word in order to let student guess the worlds on those cards by raising hands.

·         Anyone can guess a word correctly, his/her group will get a point

·         Teacher will tell student that each group have only one chance to guess the words, and students can start guessing the words after teacher give them at least three explanations.

 

    Activity 2:

·         Teacher will ask each student to pick a card, and then he/she will read the explanations to other students in order to let them guess what the word is.

·         Any one can guess the word correctly; his /her groups will a point. But if anyone in the explainer’s own group can guess the words correctly, his/her groups will get two points.

·         Give students in each group a turn to be an explainer.

·         Teacher will tell students that each group have only one chance to guess the words, and students can start guessing the words after the explainer give them at least three clues.

 

4.      Evaluation. After finishing the activities, teacher will give students

total scores.

 

5.      Extension. Teacher will ask students to interview American people about their belief on any topic
